CLIENT: Atkins/Dubai Airports
STUDY TYPE: Classified Vehicle Counts/OD Surveys
DATE: August – November 2010, September - December 2015
i4 Research undertook the initial study of landside/terminal kerbside activity in 2010. This was the first time a video-based methodology had been applied for data collection. Many presentations and meetings with police, security, CID and RTA were required prior to obtaining approvals.
Within the landside study scope was parking occupancy and duration profiles at all terminal parking lots, all entry/exit flows from each direction to/from the various terminals, kerbside drop-off behaviour (dwell-time/occupancy/detailed vehicle classification), forecourt entry/exit flows, dedicated delivery vehicle access activity, terminal building access counts and forecourt passenger crossing counts, and taxi staging and circulation tracking via license plate capture.
As is the case with all our previous Dubai Airport studies, significant resource was required to conduct these studies simultaneously to provide a comprehensive holistic view of all inter-related traffic infrastructure operations. Apart from solid project management skills and communication of updates and permissions to multiple departments and stakeholders, to successfully collect data from all survey components at the same time to achieve this view was the result of thorough survey planning and fieldwork execution.
Many of the surveys were conducted for a continuous 48-hour duration and also required over 250 support staff, each with supporting security identification. Surveys were conducted using a mix of video, automatic and manual methodologies and included over 350 camera system installations. A further study with a very similar scope and scale was completed at the end of 2015.
