STUDY TYPE: Revealed Preference/Stated Preference/OD/ATC

DATE: January 2014 – July 2014

In the first half of 2014, i4Research successfully completed an extensive programme of challenging surveys to support the update of Dubai’s strategic transport model.

Our in-house team designed and developed software applications to run both of the complex revealed and stated preference surveys. This enabled far greater control over the collection of quality data in the field via embedded logic rules together with the ability to deliver data within 24 hours of fieldwork collection, the ability to review and dynamically change sampling targets for the following fieldwork day, and for the SP surveys, the ability to present from 1784 combinations of transport mode options for each scenario.

Over 23,000 tightly structured, randomly sampled CAPI based household interviews were conducted, requiring a resource of over 70 fieldworkers spread across 3 or 4 community zones each evening for 6 weeks. Simultaneously, over 170 ATC’s were installed and more than 10,000 telephone interviews were undertaken with residents to collect their inter-emirate trip diaries. Amongst the key challenges overcome were fulfilling the documentation requirements to achieve police approvals, training staff on complex concepts, motivating and re-energizing staff when rejection rates were demoralizing, and managing targets against immovable deadlines but with frequently changing survey parameters.
